About

Project Description

The Florida Department of Transportation began work on April 5, 2021 to improve US 27 from South Highlands Avenue to the Sebring Parkway in Highlands County. This project incorporates Adaptive Signal Control Technology (ASCT) and Intelligent Transportation (IT) devices for use along US 27. An adaptive traffic signal system responds and adjusts to traffic conditions in real-time, improving traffic flow to match traffic conditions, reduce unnecessary stops and delays, reduce emissions with reduced idle times as well as improve safety.

Project Improvements

  • Install ASCT and IT devices on the14 traffic signals on US 27 between South Highlands Avenue and the Sebring Parkway to react to fluctuations in traffic demands and improve traffic flow along the corridor
  • Add fiber optic communications to the corridor for communications to the traffic controllers
  • Add a centralized Advanced Traffic Management System for the Highlands County signal system
  • Add cameras at the signals for viewing the corridor
