About
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), along with Sarasota County, has identified the need to make improvements to the I-75 / Fruitville Road (SR 780) interchange to improve highway operations, safety, and regional mobility.
The interchange improvements include the design of a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), which will significantly reduce delay on Fruitville Road, and reduce the number of conflict points to improve overall safety for all users. The DDI also offers the ability to accommodate future traffic volume growth. This project has been advanced as a part the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative.
Improvements include:
- Reconstruct interchange from the existing partial cloverleaf design to a diverging diamond interchange (DDI)
- Widen about 2 miles of I-75, from Palmer Boulevard to north of Fruitville Road, to a six-lane highway with three through lanes per direction
- Reconstruct I-75 bridges over Fruitville Road
- Reconstruct I-75 southbound bridge, and widen I-75 northbound bridge, over Palmer Boulevard
- Widen I-75 bridges over Main A Canal
- Install emergency stopping sites on off-ramps
- Widen Fruitville Road from Honore Avenue to east of Coburn Road
- Install 7-foot buffered bike lanes and 6-foot sidewalks on Fruitville Road
- Replace traffic signals on Fruitville Road at Paramount Drive, Cattlemen Road, and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard
- Install new lighting on Fruitville Road
- Construct noise wall on I-75 northbound from Bee Ridge Road on-ramp to just north of Main A Canal
- Relocate tower
