About
Project Description
SR 29 is currently a two-lane roadway with one 12-foot travel lane in each direction and a 4-foot shoulder on either side of the roadway. There is an open drainage system and the existing right of way is 200 feet wide. The posted speed limit begins at 45 mph, then increases to 55 mph and 60 mph north of New Market Road/Westclox Road.
Project Improvements
This project consists of widening an approximately 3-mile-long segment of SR 29. The final roadway will consist of two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction with 4-foot paved inside shoulders, 10-foot (5-foot paved) outside shoulders, and a 30-foot grass median. Intersection improvements are proposed for the intersection of SR 29 at New Market Road/Westclox Road. Roadside ditches will be used to collect and convey runoff for treatment and attenuation.
The adjacent land use is mainly agricultural. An FSU-Collier County medical campus is located on the east side of SR 29 at Heritage Boulevard. A University of Florida Agricultural Research Center is located on the west side of SR 29 at Experimental Station Road.
The improvements to SR 29 will accommodate future growth, decrease truck traffic downtown, correct design deficiencies in the roadway, improve safety by reducing conflict points, accomodate bicyclists and pedestrians, improve the regional transportation network, and improve emergency evacuation.
