MATLACHA, Fla. – Two lanes of traffic are now open on the Little Pine Island Bridge, marking a major milestone in the recovery and reconstruction efforts following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022. This change is expected to reduce congestion; however, drivers should still anticipate possible delays.

The second lane opened Monday, April 4th. This marked the beginning of Interim Phase 2. The eastbound lane on the original bridge remains in use, while a newly constructed westbound lane on the new bridge is now open—restoring two-way traffic and easing congestion for residents, commuters, and business owners. Westbound motorists will no longer need to cross into eastbound lanes. Drivers are encouraged to remain in their designated lanes and anticipate possible delays as utility work begins on the new bridge.

Construction crews will continue performing utility work over the next several weeks. While this phase of work may not always be visible from the roadway, it remains a critical part of the overall project.

Once the utility work is completed, Phase 2 will begin, redirecting all traffic onto the newly built bridge, where two lanes will be open, and vehicles will travel in both directions. At that time, we will resume providing regular updates.

FDOT is committed to constructing a bridge that is built to last, capable of withstanding extreme loads and environmental stresses. Once completed, this structure will embody resilience, ensuring it stands strong against future storms and serves the community safely for generations to come.
