SR 33 Design in Polk County
Welcome to the website for the State Road (SR) 33 Design project in Polk County, Florida. From June 2012 through June 2014, a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study was completed for State Road (SR) 33, from Old Combee Road (MP 4.993) to north of Tomkow Road (MP 9.104) in Polk County, Florida. The recommended improvements to this section of SR 33 include widening the existing roadway from two to four lanes and the reconstruction of the SR 33 interchange at Interstate 4. In addition, the Access Management Classification for the entire project length (4.3 miles) will change from Access Class 4 to Access Class 3. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) granted a Location and Concept Design Acceptance on June 27, 2014, concurring with the PD&E study recommendations. With the PD&E project phase complete, the next project phase, known as design, began in July 2014. It is during the design phase when project details are finalized, resulting in a final set of construction documents and when permits are obtained.
The design project has been divided into two construction segments. Segment One is the section of SR 33 from Old Combee Road to University Boulevard, which is approximately 2.89 miles in length. Segment Two is the section of SR 33 from University Boulevard to north of Tomkow Road, which is approximately 1.36 miles. Both projects are being designed simultaneously. The project limits are shown on the project location map on this page.
